Knocking noise in engine? 2007/12/17 23:51 Karma: 0
HI all,
Other day went riding, went through some mud holes, got stuck, engine died, after I got it started I noticed a knocking sound in the engine.
Kinda of like when a lifter knocks in a car, can anyone give me some more insight to what it is, and should I be worried about. Or should I just change the oil and see if it goes away.

if it was knocking that bad i wouldn't drive it until you have a mechanic look at it. No point in blowing a motor if a mechanic can trouble shoot the problem in a few minutes.

thanks

Hi ryan thanks for the reply, I changed the oil in it, and it's not so much a knocking sound but a ticking sound. Went out today in the fields behind my house and now it;s blowing white smoke out the exhaust. Son-in-law said it;s the rings and they need to fixed. What do u think? Am I looking a engine rebuild? Thanks again.

Mud running is one of the hardest things an engine can do. the mud smothers the engine cases and cylinder and cause the engine to run at hotter temperatures. the mud insulates everything and holds the heat in. this will and does cause piston swell that can and will cause failures much like your experiencing now. sounds like rings are shot. best thing to do is a compression test. that usually gives a good sign as to what is going on. if you have acess to a bore scope you can always take a peak inside. Good luck, hope it all works out for you on the cheap side. Keep an eye on your oil levels if you are running it.

hi thanks for the advice, i found out it is the rings since it's blowing white smoke, so I decided to park it til I can get it fixed, sucks but I don;t want to cause more damage that would cause more money
